Minority grapevine varieties as climate change adaptation strategy: Exploring heat tolerance plasticity

Climate change is increasing average temperatures and intensity frequency of extreme events such as heat waves. Productivity declines plant damage due to those changes are already described for several majority varieties, especially in the Mediterranean basin. Less explored minority varieties can arise alternatives high tolerance, or having acclimation potential heat. We evaluated tolerance after three summer thermic environments four Spanish varieties: two (‘Tempranillo’, ‘Airén’) (‘Jarrosuelto’, ‘Morate’). Summer differed temperature, length warm period. Varieties its plasticity environments. Within ‘Tempranillo’ showed low moderate highlighting susceptibility climate change. ‘Airén’ had slightly higher than certain adaptation capacity minority, ‘Jarrosuelto’ but plasticity. ‘Morate’ was variety with highest plasticity, indicating strong adaptive potential. Majority displayed global warming negative effects. However, offer solutions either by acclimation.
